K-12 education in the United States includes primary education starting in kindergarten, and secondary education ending in grade 12. Government-funded free schools are generally provided for these grades, but private schools and homeschooling are also possible.
Traditionally, the grades are A+, A, A−, B+, B, B−, C+, C, C−, D+, D, D− and F, with A+ being the highest and F being lowest. In some cases, grades can also be numerical. Numeric-to-letter-grade conversions generally vary from system to system and between disciplines and status.

In 1965 only 5 percent of middle-grades schools in the United States were 6–8 or 5–8 middle schools, and 67 percent were 7–9 junior high schools.
While grades 6 through 8 are universally recognized as middle school years, some states veer from the norm due to educational strategies and historical patterns unique to each location. Think of California, Nebraska, and New York where middle school spans grades 5 through 9 .
