Sparta’s legendary status can be seen in the fact that St Gregory, Bishop of Tours (c. 538‒94), felt the need to invent a Spartan king with the very Roman name Festus to be a contemporary to King Solomon. In the Middle Ages Martin Luther (1483‒1546) noted the toughness of Spartan ‘ironmen’.
