This tip sheet was developed by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) to provide information for practitioners regarding fluid therapy for dogs and cats.
Peripheral indwelling IV catheters are most commonly placed in the cephalic vein in dogs and cats. In the hind limb, they are most commonly placed in the lateral saphenous vein. Other veins used often for catheterisation include the accessory cephalic, and medial saphenous.
The intraosseous method for fluid therapy is a safe and efficacious route in the critically ill patient. 1,2 After adequate blood pressure is restored, the method for fluid delivery is switched to the intravenous route.
