What is a Midline Catheter? A Midline Catheter is a small flexible tube that is shorter than a PICC. It is inserted in the same vein location as a PICC, but it only extends to a point just below the level of your armpit. It is not a central venous catheter (CVC).

18 Αυγ 2023 · PICC line: PICC lines are better suited for treatments that require longer-term venous access and those that need to be delivered near the heart. Midline: Midlines are suitable for shorter treatments and are not ideal for medications that require direct delivery to the central circulation.
The only difference between a midline catheter and a PICC is the length of the catheter. A midline catheter is about half the length of a PICC and so the end of a midline catheter lies within a vein close to your shoulder.
Why have a PICC line or Midline? A PICC line or midline is useful for patients who have small veins and/or require long term intravenous therapy, for example, over a week. PICC lines and midlines can deliver medications directly to the blood stream and reduce irritation to the veins, which can sometimes be caused by medications.
Catheter-related (CR) thrombosis is a significant complication of midline catheters (MCs) and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). Limited existing data for MCs suggest a favorable complication profile for MCs.
22 Μαΐ 2022 · So what is the difference between a PICC line and a Midline? The answer is clearly demonstrated in the image below. The midline is much shorter, so though it is inserted at the same site as a PICC line, the tip lies more distally, just under the axilla.
