In all, 130 (11.88%) MCs developed symptomatic CR thrombosis (DVT or SVT) as compared to 112 (6.88%) PICCs (OR: 1.82; P < .0001; Table 3). Midline catheters had a 53% greater odds of developing CR DVT than PICCs (7.04% MCs and 4.72% PICCs; OR: 1.53; P = .0126; Table 3).

What is a Midline Catheter? A Midline Catheter is a small flexible tube that is shorter than a PICC. It is inserted in the same vein location as a PICC, but it only extends to a point just below the level of your armpit. It is not a central venous catheter (CVC).
Our study aims are to compare the incidences of infectious and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and sepsis related to PICCs and Midlines. Methods: We performed a single-center retrospective review at an academic hospital. Data were collected on patients admitted between 1/1/2014–5/31/2016.
To our knowledge, this is the largest RCT comparing the safety and efficacy of a new generation MCs with PICCs. We found only 1 CRBSI, with no difference between the catheter groups. However, we observed an increase in all-cause catheter complications in the MC group when compared with the PICC control group, with an IRR of 2.37.
