What is a Midline Catheter? A Midline Catheter is a small flexible tube that is shorter than a PICC. It is inserted in the same vein location as a PICC, but it only extends to a point just below the level of your armpit. It is not a central venous catheter (CVC).

PICC are placed peripherally (ex. arms) but terminate centrally. There are also midline catheters, which are shorter lines that are also placed peripherally. It is important to note the type of line and where it is placed to determine approved use of medications, fluids, blood draws taken or given from the line.
The only difference between a midline catheter and a PICC is the length of the catheter. A midline catheter is about half the length of a PICC and so the end of a midline catheter lies within a vein close to your shoulder.
Catheter-related (CR) thrombosis is a significant complication of midline catheters (MCs) and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). Limited existing data for MCs suggest a favorable complication profile for MCs.
To prevent infection during insertion the person placing the line will wear a sterile surgical hat, mask and gown. We will also cover you in a large sterile drape, which covers the bed. The line will be used with aseptic infection prevention precautions to reduce the risk of infection.
