I reached for my favorite antique finish: Minwax® Paste Finishing Wax. Using an old athletic sock as an applicator, I rubbed a coat of dark Paste Finishing Wax over the iron bands on the inside, and over the antique shellac finish on the outside, giving it more protection, too.
Mineral spirits generally take off wax and any new shellac or lacquer you add will melt into the previous finish, then add more wax and buff everything back out to a nice shine. Polyurethane is also a very easy finish and very durable so you generally wouldn't need to mess with it after applying.
Minwax is my top pick for pasting waxes because it’s easy to use and doesn’t leave a tacky surface. It’s also a maintenance-free, affordable option, costing around $25 for a can. Briwax and Johnson Paste Wax are also great but lack in some areas like durability and after-maintenance.

Finishing. I have been working on finishing this desktop for 4–5 days now. Sanded, multiple stains, 4 coats poly (sanded in between), and was all looking good until the Minwax finishing paste. I have put a lot of elbow grease, but when the light glares off it, there are noticeable streaks now.
