These include the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) (e.g., Kummerow et al. 2000) and CloudSat (Stephens et al. 2002) mission. TRMM carries both a precipitation radar (PR) at 14 GHz and a TRMM microwave imager (TMI).

Precipitation is the part of the water cycle that delivers water from the atmosphere to the Earth’s surface. When and where precipitation falls is determined by the climate system especially by the patterns of atmospheric and ocean circulation, and how much water returns in the atmosphere.
1. “Patterns exist everywhere—in regularly occurring shapes or structures and in repeating events and relationships. For example, patterns are discernible in the symmetry of flowers and snowflakes, the cycling of the seasons, and the repeated base pairs of DNA.” (p. 85)
The water cycle describes how water evaporates from the surface of the earth, rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and falls again to the surface as precipitation.
For example, patterns are discernible in the symmetry of flowers and snowflakes, the cycling of the seasons, and the repeated base pairs of DNA. Noticing patterns is often a first step to organizing and asking scientific questions about why and how the patterns occur.
