One license plate is required to be displayed on motorcycles, mopeds, recreational trailers, commercial trailers, semi-trailers and most farm trailers. Plate display Passenger license plates are required to be displayed horizontally and in an upright position with the identifying numbers and letters facing outward.
Anyone can conduct a free license plate lookup in Minnesota using online databases that provide such services. Alternatively, they can hire private investigators or obtain license plate information from the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) Division under the Department of Public Safety.

Minnesota requires all motor vehicles to be registered annually, and the vehicle registration (tabs) expire each year on the last day of the month displayed on your plates. To ensure you received your registration renewal notice, remember to keep your motor vehicle address current.

To renew your MN tabs online, gather your renewal notice, your vehicle information such as your VIN and license plate number (both of which should be printed on your notice), and payment for your renewal fees. Visit the DVS online services portal and follow the prompts to renew your registration.
