This course aims at exploring the genre of science fiction that depicts our future world, visionary scientific endeavour, and conflicts between humans, aliens, and sentient technology.
Hugo Gernsback’s (1916) employment of the awkward neologism “scientifiction” in Electrical Experimenter was the first “modern” attempt to classify this emerging genre. The eas-ier-to-enunciate “science fiction” became commonly used within a decade.
Optimally, a definition of speculative fiction will promote interpretation by suggesting affinities with similar explorations of human imagination and values.
