I show how it compares to listed XP values for published monsters, and how it can be used to improve our understanding of modifying monsters and balancing encounters. Finally, press CALCULATE to see details about the encounter, and to get a difficulty rating for the encounter given your party. Alternatively, check the "Use Challenge Rating (CR)" box, fill in the number of monsters and the CR for each monster rather than its XP level.
Calculate encounter size based on party size and level. Track initiative and turn status. Generate random NPCs, loot, magic items, traps, etc. Generate a dungeon with random features, monsters, and traps. Select monsters based on encounter level and environment. Generate random magic shops with items from the DMG.

After reading and joining a recent Twitter conversation about the complexity of the XP and CR system in 5th edition D&D, it dawned on me that I could throw together a quick Excel sheet to calculate XP for the encounter, XP per PC, and encounter difficulty, according to the current rules (Basic Rules for DMs v. 0.1).
If you're looking to just look at the levels and the monsters and see the difficulty of that encounter, the DMG for 5e (even the free version you can download) has a really convenient table for determining that. \$\endgroup\$ –
