Native to the wide-open spaces of The Treasure State, bluebunch wheatgrass, scientifically known as Pseudoroegneria spicata, is truly a sight to behold.
Montana designated bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum) as the official state grass in 1973 (also the state grass of Washington).

Grasses typically comprise the greatest canopy cover, and western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii) is usually dominant. Other species include thickspike wheatgrass ( Elymus lanceolatus ), green needlegrass ( Nassella viridula ), blue grama ( Bouteloua gracilis ), and needle and thread ( Hesperostipa comata ).
