21 Φεβ 2024 · The Montana State Grass, bluebunch wheatgrass, holds great significance not only for its striking appearance but also for its remarkable ability to thrive in challenging environments. As the official grass of the state, this unique species has been recognized for its adaptability to various terrains and its capacity to withstand dry conditions.
Montana designated bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum) as the official state grass in 1973 (also the state grass of Washington).
In areas of southeastern and central Montana where sagebrush steppe borders the mixed grass prairie, common plant associations include Wyoming big sagebrush-western wheatgrass (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis/ Pascopyrum smithii). Fire and grazing are the primary drivers of this system.
