Our Seafood Watch program rates seafood caught or farmed around the globe based on scientific criteria of environmental sustainability. People and business owners can use our recommendations and our consumer guides to find seafood that is sustainably produced.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium launched Seafood Watch in 1999 as a special exhibit about the impacts of seafood. People found the information useful, so we made it a permanent conservation program. Our original mission was to help people navigate purchasing sustainable seafood through our seafood ratings and tools like our pocket guides.
