Diagram of the Moon's phases: The Earth is at the center of the diagram and the Moon is shown orbiting (dashed circle). The Sun lights half of the Moon and Earth from the right-side. The phase of the Moon is shown next to the corresponding position of the Moon in its orbit around Earth.
Learn how the Moon changes its shape and position in the sky over a lunar month. See diagrams, animations, and explanations of the eight phases of the Moon, from New Moon to Full Moon.
The Moon goes through eight moon phases as it orbits Earth. Each moon phase shows a different percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun.
The eight lunar phases are, in order: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. The cycle repeats once a month (every 29.5 days). Like Earth, the Moon has a day side and a night side, which change as the Moon rotates.
4 Οκτ 2017 · Learn how the Moon's orbit and rotation create different phases of the Moon, and see a chart with labeled diagrams. Explore the Moon's appearance throughout 2018 with a simulator based on NASA images.
How do the moon phases that we can see from the Earth originate? View from the Earth Earth's orbit around Sun, slope of the Moon's orbit relative to the ecliptic and orbit around barycenter are neglected.
