Pluto's moons are listed here by orbital period, from shortest to longest. Charon, which is massive enough to have collapsed into a spheroid under its own gravitation, is highlighted in light purple. As the system barycenter lies far above Pluto's surface, Pluto's barycentric orbital elements have been included as well.
28 Ιουν 2011 · Pluto's moons to scale. The largest, Charon, is displayed along the bottom. Pluto's moon system – Charon, Nix, Hydra, Styx, and Kerberos – is believed to have formed after a collision between Pluto, and another Kuiper Belt Object early in the history of the solar system.
Pluto has five known moons. The largest, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. Charon’s period of revolution is exactly equal to the rotation period of Pluto itself; in other words, Charon is in synchronous orbit around Pluto. As a result, Charon is visible from only one hemisphere of Pluto.
There were three known moons of Pluto: Charon, Nix and Hydra. At least until July 2011, then another one a year later in 2012 that two additional moons were seen through the Hubble Telescope. The two newly discovered moons are natural satellites. That brings the total moons of Pluto to five. The dwarf planet was discovered in 1930.
10 Νοε 2024 · Pluto possesses five known moons. Charon, by far the largest, is fully half the size of Pluto. It revolves around Pluto—more accurately, the two bodies revolve around a common centre of mass—at a distance of about 19,640 km (12,200 miles), equal to about eight Pluto diameters.
MOONS OF PLUTO. Planet Pluto has 5 moons. Charon, the largest moon, is half the size of Pluto and is so massive that Pluto and it orbit around a common center (barycenter). For this reason, Pluto and Charon are considered double dwarf planets. Largest to smallest:
23 Οκτ 2015 · This composite image shows a sliver of Pluto's large moon, Charon, and all four of Pluto's small moons, as resolved by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) on the New Horizons spacecraft. All the moons are displayed with a common intensity stretch and spatial scale (see scale bar).
