In fact, some talented artists have created – through apparently simple drawings - an illusion of reality which is even more convincing than the real object itself. They have created an amplified version of reality, which reconstructs and analyses simple objects, views and details.
Dürer created a number of widely known and iconic prints, and the Nuremberg artist is highly respected and influential among drawers. His nuanced depiction of forms—no easy feat with a rigid, unforgiving engraving tool—is the reason so many draftsmen study and marvel at his work.
1. Gustav Klimt, known for his ornate, decorative style and the use of luxurious gold leafing, often used patterns in his artworks. The motifs were inspired by Byzantine, Greek and Egyptian art. In The Kiss (1907-8) for example, flat areas of irregular patterns compose the entire painting.
