‘Mother to Son’ by Langston Hughes was first published in December of 1922 in the magazine, Crisis. It was also included in Hughes’ collection, The Weary Blues, published four years later. This piece is one of his most popular and relatable.

“Mother to Son” is a poem by Langston Hughes. It was first published in 1922 in The Crisis, a magazine dedicated to promoting civil rights in the United States, and was later collected in Hughes’s first book The Weary Blues (1926).

“Mother to Son” is a dramatic monologue, spoken by the persona of a black mother to her son. Using the metaphor of a stairway, the mother tells her son that the journey of life more closely resembles a long, trying walk up the dark, decrepit stairways of a tenement than a glide down a “crystal stair.”
"Mother to Son" is a short poem and an extended metaphor in which a mother advises her son to always keep climbing and not to "set down on the steps" despite her also saying, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." The metaphor for life then is a staircase, stairs or a set of steps that have to be ascended just like the rungs on a ladder.
