15 Φεβ 2023 · Here we report the case of a wild bearded capuchin monkey infant (Sapajus libidinosus) with a lower limb disability. We describe its condition, the consequences for its life, death, and the interactions of the mother and other group members with it when alive and then with its corpse.

In monkeys, individual variation in response to the loss of the mother early in life can range from merely several hours of intermittent crying and restlessness to a pattern in which the infant cries and moves incessantly immediately after experiencing the loss and then virtually collapses into an unresponsive heap the next day.
Here we provide a detailed account of interactions of a wild capuchin monkey mother and other group members with a disabled infant before and after its death. Limb disability caused the infant to be in unstable positions when carried, which appeared to increase the frequency of body readjustments by the adults and may have contributed to its death.
