Mount Mazama (Tum-sum-ne in the Native American language Klamath [5]) is a complex volcano in the western U.S. state of Oregon, in a segment of the Cascade Volcanic Arc and Cascade Range. The volcano is in Klamath County, in the southern Cascades, 60 miles (97 km) north of the Oregon–California border.
23 Οκτ 2023 · Mount Mazama is one of the major volcanoes of the Cascades Arc. Crater Lake is located within the collapsed caldera of Mount Mazama on the crest of the Cascade Range in southern Oregon about 90 km (55 mi) north of the city of Klamath Falls and about 100 km (60 mi) northeast of Medford.
6 Δεκ 2022 · The boundary of Crater Lake National Park protects most of what remains of Mount Mazama, an ancient volcano that once loomed around 12,000 ft (3,700 m) skyward, amongst the tallest in the Cascade Mountain Range.
Mount Mazama is located in the southern part of the Cascade Range, about sixty miles north of the Oregon-California state line. It holds Crater Lake (giiwas in the Klamath language), at 1,943 feet the deepest freshwater body of water in the United States.
8 Μαΐ 2022 · This region is dominated by alpine forest and some high-elevation meadows. The park also includes multiple mountain streams which run down Mount Mazama (these are not connected to the lake). Crater Lake’s flora and fauna must be hardy in order to tolerate the alpine region’s harsh winters.
1 Νοε 2008 · Crater Lake partly fills one of the most spectacular calderas of the world, an 8-by-10-km basin more than 1 km deep formed by collapse of the volcano known as Mount Mazama (fig. 1) during a rapid series of explosive eruptions about 7,700 years ago.
8 Σεπ 2023 · Before the collapse, Mount Mazama loomed at approximately 12,000 ft (3,658 m) tall. Today, the highest point along the rim is Hillman Peak at 8,151 ft (2,484 m) and the highest point in the park is Mount Scott at 8,929 ft (2722 m). Wizard Island is one of the most notable features of Crater Lake.
