Crater Lake is located within the collapsed caldera of Mount Mazama on the crest of the Cascade Range in southern Oregon about 90 km (55 mi) north of the city of Klamath Falls and about 100 km (60 mi) northeast of Medford.

Crater Lake sits atop Mount Mazama, a Quaternary volcano that is part of the Western Cascade Range, active about 2.5 millions years ago to the present day. Mazama began to form a half million years ago.
