MPlayer CE is an active effort to maintain a native port of MPlayer for Nintendo's GameCube and Wii proprietary platforms, it uses internal libmenu as frontend with some usability enhancements.
Extract the mplayer_ce folder to the apps folder on the SD card. Then run Mplayer_CE with the homebrew channel. See here for how to set up your config files for SMB shares, customising the menu layout in menu.conf, adding input with input.conf and changing default behaviour with mplayer.conf.
