Windy Ridge Viewpoint, an alternative to the Johnston Ridge Observatory in Washington state, offers stunning panoramic views of Mt St Helens. Windy Ridge is only four miles (6.4 km) from Mt St Helens’ crater and is the closest you can get to the volcano without hiking.

Mount St. Helens (known as Lawetlat'la to the indigenous Cowlitz people, and Loowit or Louwala-Clough to the Klickitat) is an active stratovolcano located in Skamania County, Washington, [1] in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It lies 52 miles (83 km) northeast of Portland, Oregon, [2] and 98 miles (158 km) south of Seattle. [3] .
On the way up you can see Spirit Lake, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount Hood, and Mount Saint Helens. There are great views looking into the crater on the side of Mount Saint Helens. The trail extends between the Windy Ridge Viewpoint parking area and the upper Smith Creek Trailhead.
If you are visiting Mount St. Helens National Monument and want to see the immense devastation caused by the 1980 eruption without climbing to the top of the crater, the Windy Ridge Viewpoint and interpretive site is one of your best options.
