This literature review sought to identify the models of multiracial identity development, the effects of schooling on multiracial identity development, best practices for school staff in supporting multiracial identity development, and gaps in research regarding schooling and multiracial identity development.
Context-specific and internally diverse. A realist theory of identity provides the rationale for viewing racial identity as context-specific and not internally homogenous (Moya, 2000). Simply put, context matters for the salience of Multiracial identities.
Thus, this chapter seeks to fill this void in the literature. We discuss demographics for self-identified biracial/multiracial persons, share two biracial or multiracial identity development models, and describe the characteristics of gifted biracial/multiracial students.
