31 Αυγ 2023 · Conducting airways: nose, nasopharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchiles, terminal bronchioles. Respiratory zone: respiratory bronchioles, alveoli. Breathing cycle. Inspiration - diaphragm contracts and pulls down, intercostal muscles contract and expand the rib cage -> air enters the lungs.
The muscles of respiration are also called the 'breathing pump muscles', they form a complex arrangement in the form of semi-rigid bellows around the lungs. All muscles that are attached to the human rib cage have the inherent potential to cause a breathing action.
In general, two muscle groups are used during normal inspiration: the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles. Additional muscles can be used if a bigger breath is required. When the diaphragm contracts, it moves inferiorly toward the abdominal cavity, creating a larger thoracic cavity and more space for the lungs.
Anatomy and physiology. The lungs are situated within the ribcage enclosed by two pleural membranes (Fig 1). At the base of the thorax, separating it from the abdominal cavity, lies the diaphragm. This is the main muscle of inspiration, and is innervated by the phrenic nerve.
12 Ιουν 2019 · This review is a comprehensive description of all muscles that assist lung inflation or deflation in any way. The developmental origin, anatomical orientation, mechanical action, innervation, and pattern of activation are described for each respiratory muscle fulfilling this broad definition.
Anatomy of the Respiratory System Objectives When you have completed this section, you should be able to • trace the flow of air from the nose to the pulmonary alveoli; and • relate the function of any portion of the respiratory tract to its gross and microscopic anatomy. The term respiration has three meanings: (1) ventilation of
