The lyrics urge listeners to stand up against authoritarianism and fight for their rights. Lead singer Matt Bellamy has described the song as “a call to arms,” urging people to resist the injustices that they see around them.

The music video for "Resistance" features footage of the band performing live on The Resistance Tour as well as crowds outside the venue awating to see Muse. The video debuted on 14 January 2010, and was filmed by Wayne Isham in Madrid at Madrid Palacio de Deportes 2009 .
"Resistance" makes music reference to "Citizen Erased" from Origin of Symmetry, which also draws lyrical influences from Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. On the 11th January 2010, it was announced through Muse.mu that "Resistance" would be the third single from The Resistance.
Resistance: Matt said this was based on the relationship between Winston and Julia in the book "1984". Haven't read it, but I really like this song. It shows the fear about getting caught (Will they find our hiding place? Is this our last embrace?) by authorities or the thought police in this case.
