In this article, we describe the most rigorous effort to date to estimate the size of the Muslim population in each country of the world, resulting in a global estimate of 1.57 billion Muslims in 2009, or nearly one in four of the world’s 6.8 billion inhabitants.

The presented data show that Asia has 69% of the world Muslim population while Africa has 27%. In addition, Muslims constitute 24% of the world population, or 1.65 billion people. This is expected to increase by over one percentage point each decade, reaching one out of four by 2020 and one out of three by 2075.
Of the total Muslim population, 10-13% are Shia Muslims and 87-90% are Sunni Muslims. Most Shias (between 68% and 80%) live in just four countries: Iran, Pakistan, India and Iraq.
