8 Νοε 2024 · It would be Raphael’s love of carnal pleasure that would prove fatal. In 1520, at the age of just 37, Raphael died from what contemporary accounts claim was a fever caused by overly exertive sex with his mistress, a woman depicted in the artist’s Portrait of a Young Woman (1518-1519).

The dead rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints. Altogether there are over 300 figures, with nearly all the males and angels originally shown as nudes; many were later partly covered up by painted draperies, of which some remain after recent cleaning and restoration.
