If the switch is connected to a dock, the green light on the front of the cradle will light up when the console powers up. If your console isn't docked, you should either see the lock screen or a Nintendo logo indicating that the boot process is starting.
Funnily enough, what you did isn't how it fixed it. It's because you disconnected the Dock entirely, and restarted the Switch. To fix this problem, you need to turn the Switch off, unplug the Dock from everything, then plug the dock back in, put the switch in and turn it on.
