The fruit is a wrinkled purple berry 4–6.5 mm diameter, with a waxy coating, hence the common name wax myrtle. This species has root nodules containing nitrogen-fixing microorganisms, allowing it to grow in relatively poor soils.
Myrica is one of the most versatile, best looking, and truly adaptable large natives for Sonoma County gardens. It grows 10-30 ft. tall and 10-12-ft. wide, amenable to shaping into a manicured hedge as well as into a symmetrical, medium–sized shrub or narrow tree.
The Pacific Wax Myrtle's dense bushy form, rapid growth and glossy green leaves make it a popular shrub for screening. It can also be pruned into an attractive small tree. Broadleaf evergreen shrub that can ultimately grow to 30’ tall and 20’ wide if it is not pruned.
California wax myrtle (Morella californica) is a moderately fast growing and long-lived shrub or tree.It grows in an upright form, with active growth during the spring and summer. The shiny dark-green leaves remain on the plant throughout the year, making it an attractive garden planting.
Distribution: Pacific Wax Myrtle is found along the Pacific coast from Gray’s Harbor, Washington to southern California, with an isolated population on Vancouver Island. Growth: It grows at a moderate rate to 10-30 feet (3-10m) tall and wide, growing the tallest away from fierce sea winds.
