Fingernails. Toenails. A nail is a horn-like envelope covering the dorsal aspect of the terminal phalanges of fingers and toes in humans, most primates, and a few other mammals. Nails are similar to claws, which are found on numerous other animals. In common usage, the word nail often refers to the nail plate only.

The nails are located on the dorsal (top) side of the digits. The main function of the nails is to protect the tissues as well as the germinal (root) area of the nail unit located beneath the skin. The palmar (bottom) side of each digit is soft and fleshy with a padding of spongy subcutaneous tissue often referred to as the pulp.
The matrix is situated in the dermis in an area of dense, fibrous tissue, known as the mantle. This is the reproductive part (living part) of the nail, where the cells begin to grow. It contains nerves, blood and lymph vessels. The cells are called onychocytes that make the nail.
