It melts congruously at 7.55 °C into a liquid with 35.7% NaOH and density 1.392 g/cm 3, and therefore floats on it like ice on water. However, at about 4.9 °C it may instead melt incongruously into a mixture of solid NaOH·3.5H 2 O and a liquid solution. [17]
14 Ιουλ 2023 · Sodium hydroxide is an ionic crystal composed of Na + cations and OH – anions. It is characterized by its colorless appearance, lack of odor, and high deliquescence. The substance exhibits a high degree of solubility in aqueous solutions, and its dissolution is accompanied by the release of thermal energy.

18 Νοε 2023 · 2 NaOH + Cl 2 → 2 NaClO + H 2 O In a process known as saponification, which is used in soapmaking, sodium hydroxide can hydrolyze organic esters such as those found in naturally occurring plant or animal fats, producing fatty acid salts and glycerol.
Physical Properties. As a solid, sodium hydroxide is colorless, odorless, and features a crystalline structure. When dissolved in water or neutralized with acid it liberates substantial heat, which can be dangerous. 1 Its melting point is 318°C, and it has a boiling point of 1388°C.
