For the shepherd sermon I built tension by talking about what it was like to be a shepherd in that society: distrusted, bottom-of-the-social-ladder existence. Bring a climax into the story.
Not all narrative sermons are memorable. But because of the power of a well-done narrative sermon, I resolved to make narrative preaching part of my own repertoire. Here are some lessons I’ve learned by preaching what I call Expository Character Narrative Sermons (ECNS).
In The Homiletical Plot Lowry teaches us how to understand the “plot” structure of a biblical narrative and shape a sermon that reflects that narrative structure. As a result, he provides an introduction to narrative preaching that is both unquestionably biblical and remarkably intriguing.
In a frame narrative sermon, the preacher not only may choose to introduce the narrative with some sort of introduction outside of the narrative itself, but he or she also may choose to use a conclusion that focuses the narrative for the congregation.
