The summary of the systemic review and the recommendations given in this section offer guidance on how to manage people presenting with symptoms of abnormal vaginal discharge. The commonest causes of vaginal discharge are briefly discussed below.
Recommendations for the management of vaginal discharge. For people with symptom of vaginal discharge, we recommend treatment for N. gonorrhoeae and/or C. trachomatis and/or T. vaginalis on the same visit. We suggest treatment based on the results of quality-assured molecular assays for N. gonorrhoeae and/or C. trachomatis and/or T. vaginalis.
Vaginal discharge is a common presenting complaint in women across all age groups, most commonly in reproductive age. A thorough his-tory, examination and investigations are needed to arrive at a diag-nosis and formulate management plan. Sexual history should be taken in a sensitive manner and tests should be tailored to those at high risk.
