This episode also introduces the fact that Gibbs doesn't feel the need to include NCIS agents in his investigation unless they are a part of HIS team. This is one of those qualities of Gibb's leadership that is fun to set his character apart but seems to be the nature of all of the procedural shows on television today.

A Navy lieutenant who was reported missing nearly ten years ago has been found by a deer hunter. When the NCIS team arrives at the scene to investigate, they see that his remains have been mummified.
This storyline was inspired by the case of Andy Muns, Disbursement Officer of the USS Cacaphon, who mysteriously disappeared before Morning Muster, near Subic Bay Naval Base, Philippines in 1968 during the Vietnam War. It was one of the oldest cases resolved by NCIS Cold Case Unit.
