The Neil Simon Theatre, originally the Alvin Theatre, is a Broadway theater at 250 West 52nd Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1927, the theater was designed by Herbert J. Krapp and was built for Alex A. Aarons and Vinton Freedley.
One can make a decent case that the Neil Simon Theatre wasn’t built at the best of times. Construction on the venue started and finished in 1927. For context, New York City’s modern Theater District started coming into existence towards the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century.
In 1960, the venue re-opened and began once more to run Broadway productions, including the original Annie, which ran for six years from 1977. The same year, the venue was renamed the Neil Simon Theatre by new owners Nederlander Organization, after the playwright Neil Simon.
Owned by Herman Bernstein in 1947. Purchased by the Nederlanders in 1977, who renamed it in 1983 for Neil Simon, during the run of his autobiographical Brighton Beach Memoirs.
