Contrary to the traditional romance of aristocrats, modern English novels give a realistic presentation of life of the common English people. This is the most significant phenomenon in the history of the development of English literature in the 18th century.
Neoclassicism dominated English literature from the Restoration in 1660 until the end of the eighteenth century, when the publication of Lyrical Ballads (1798) by Wordsworth and Coleridge marked the full emergence of Romanticism.
