The short ton (abbreviation tn[1]) is a measurement unit equal to 2,000 pounds (907.18 kg). It is commonly used in the United States, where it is known simply as a ton;[1] however, the term is ambiguous, the single word "ton" being variously used for short, long, and metric tons.
Net Tonnage (NT) is another volumetric measure, which focuses more on a ship’s earning potential. Unlike Gross Tonnage, which accounts for all enclosed spaces, Net Tonnage only considers spaces that can be used to carry cargo, or other revenue-generating activities.
To distinguish between the two tons, the smaller U.S. ton is called short, while the larger British ton is called long. There is also an third type of ton called the metric ton, equal to 1000 kilograms, or approximately 2204 pounds. The metric ton is officially called tonne.
There are two different non-metric tons, and you might encounter either one depending on context. There is a 'short ton', equal to 2000 lbs: about 907 kg. There is also a 'long ton' (also 'imperial ton' or 'displacement ton'), equal to 2240 lbs: about 1016 kg.
