Chronologically, the first time we see it is in Henry's flashback of when he first arrived in the Upside Down. In that flashback, the MF is just a cloud of particles mindlessly sitting in one spot. Other than the immediate area right underneath it, it wasn't corrupting anything or notably spreading.
