The new Serial Neurologic Assessment in Pediatrics (SNAP) tool was developed to optimize screening neurologic assessments in children. It was designed for contemporary PICU practice that includes children who are intubated, sedated, and/or have developmental disabilities.
Critical care nurses routinely screen for neurological decline by using serial bedside neurological assessments. However, assessment components, frequency, and communication thresholds are not standardized.
Given the high prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in ICU survivors, rigorously exploring the metric integrity of available tools used for anxiety, depressive, and psychological distress symptom assessment in the vulnerable ICU population is a practice and research priority.
