The most common presenting complaints were lethargy (n = 50, 85%), weakness or syncope (n = 31, 53%), inappetence (n = 30, 51%), weight loss (n = 17, 29%), polydipsia and polyuria (n = 13, 22%), and pica (n = 7, 12%).

Neutropenia is a serious hematopathologic change that should not be ignored. In almost all patients, it is an important primary or secondary indicator of significant underlying disease. While in some neutropenic patients the diagnostic work up will be simple, in others it is challenging.

Anemia may be caused by blood loss, destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis), or decreased production. In severe blood loss anemia, red blood cells are lost, but death usually results from the loss of total blood volume, rather than from the lack of oxygen caused by loss of red blood cells.
