  1. 27 Ιουν 2017 · So I have started making knives/hatchets with 1084 steel from New Jersey Steel Baron and I have heard stories of heat treating where the knife becomes so brittle that it can break before tempering it.

  2. Straight from our stock, our 1084 comes pickled and annealed, so makers can be assured that it will arrive ready and able to be forged or ground into a great blade, or used in damascus steel production.

  7. 21 Ιαν 2017 · Here's what I do to figure starting steel size for forging. I work in cubic inches of material. So if my blade is going to forge out at .25" thick, by 1.25" wide, by 5" long, and I want a tang that's at least 4" long. So I add half the tang length to the blade length and get .25 x 1.25 x 7 = 2.1875 cubic inches of steel.
