Properties. Liquid NH 3. Solid NH 3. Two visible states of NH 3. Ammonia is a colourless gas with a characteristically pungent smell. It is lighter than air, its density being 0.589 times that of air. It is easily liquefied due to the strong hydrogen bonding between molecules.
The Lewis structure of H 2 O indicates that there are four regions of high electron density around the oxygen atom: two lone pairs and two chemical bonds: We predict that these four regions are arranged in a tetrahedral fashion (Figure \(\PageIndex{6}\)), as indicated in Figure \(\PageIndex{9}\).
2 ημέρες πριν · NH 3 + H 2 O ⇌ NH 4 + + OH − These aqueous solutions of ammonia are basic and are sometimes called solutions of ammonium hydroxide (NH 4 OH). The equilibrium, however, is such that a 1.0-molar solution of NH 3 provides only 4.2 millimoles of hydroxide ion.
The ionic self-dissociation constant of liquid NH 3 at −50 °C is approx. 10-33 mol²·l-2. Solubility of salts
Molecular shape of ammonia. Because, there are three sigma bonds and one lone pair around nitrogen atom, molecular shape of ammonia is trigonal pyramidal.
NH3 Ammonia. Ammonia has 4 regions of electron density around the central nitrogen atom (3 bonds and one lone pair). These are arranged in a tetrahedral shape. The resulting molecular shape is trigonal pyramidal with H-N-H angles of 106.7°.
