25 Φεβ 2022 · The 725-kilometer-long Niagara Escarpment began its life as the bed of a tropical sea in Michigan around 450 million years ago. Sediments were compacted into rock over millions of years, primarily magnesium-rich limestone (dolostone) and shale.

THE NIAGARA ESCARPMENT. In the long interval between the Jurassic (about 200 million years ago) and today, few rocks were actually forming in Michigan. Instead, all the forces of erosion were at work creating much of our scenery, exposing our mineral wealth, and creating some of it.
