We highlight how considering hierarchical niche structure, correlations in breadth among niche axes, and factors that differentiate realized and fundamental niches may enhance our understanding of ecological and evolutionary questions and improve conservation outcomes.
We found a significant positive relationship between range size and environmental tolerance breadth (z = 0.49), habitat breadth (z = 0.45), and diet breadth (z = 0.28). The overall positive effect persisted even when incorporating sampling effects.
Whether niche breadth determines diversification and distribution breadth and how niche breadth is partitioned among individuals and populations within a species are important but particularly understudied topics.
9 Ιουλ 2018 · Niche breadth can be described by a species occurrence range on an environmental gradient. Knowledge of niche breadths is necessary to predict extinction risks (Kotiaho, Kaitala, Komonen, & Päivinen, 2005) and design conservation measures (Gaston et al., 2000).
