We highlight how considering hierarchical niche structure, correlations in breadth among niche axes, and factors that differentiate realized and fundamental niches may enhance our understanding of ecological and evolutionary questions and improve conservation outcomes.
Niche breadth usually refers to the diversity of resources used or environments tolerated by an individual, population, species, or clade. Here we review key research in ecology, evolution, and conservation biology in light of niche breadth.
16 Οκτ 2024 · Niche Breadth: Generalists have wide niche breadth, allowing them to exploit a variety of resources and conditions. Specialists have narrow niche breadth, focusing on specific resources and conditions.
Since food is one of the most important dimensions of the niche, the analysis of animal diets is closely related to the problem of niche specifications. In this chapter I will review niche metrics and the related measurement of dietary overlap and dietary preferences.
3 Σεπ 2021 · The role that species plays within an ecosystem is its niche. It encompasses where in the environment the organism is, how it gets its energy and how it interacts with other species and its physical environment; This is how an organism fits into the ecosystem; Example of a niche. A dung beetle occupies a very specific niche within its ecosystem ...

Niche breadth, also called "niche width" and "niche size," can be thought of as the extent of the hypervolume representing the realized niche of an organismic unit. As an example, a koala, Phascolarctos cinerius , eats only leaves of certain species of Eucalyptus gum trees and thus has a more specialized food niche than the Virginia opossum ...
