While Nikon has the worst AF of the big three camera makers, it has the best manual focus system. A unique feature of Nikon is that you may move the focus ring at any time for instant manual-focus override.

These aids were dropped with the advent of autofocus and are absent in digital SLRs, making manual focus more difficult and less accurate.

Like most of Nikon’s Z lenses, the focusing ring on the 24-200mm isn’t mechanically coupled to the lens elements; it’s a focus-by-wire system instead.
