Reference ranges vary between laboratories. Values provided by the reference laboratory should be always used.
In addition to counting, measuring, and analyzing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, automated blood analyzers also measure the average size and the amount of hemoglobin in red blood cells. This information can be helpful when trying to identify the cause of an anemia.
Breed values also vary with for example Greyhounds having a higher hematocrit (52-60%) than "non-greyhounds". Saint Bernard dogs often have low hematocrit (35-40%). Other factors such as hydration status and splenic contraction during fear can affect the hematocrit (and Hgb and RBC).
Here is a great chart showing the normal blood values for dogs in both American and Canadian Units.
7 Απρ 2020 · The normal RBC count in the dog is 4.8–9.3 million/microliter with a packed cell volume (PCV) of 35–55%. In the cat, the normal RBC count is 5.91–9.93 million/microliter with a PCV of 29–45%. Healthy dogs will have <1.5% reticulocytes and healthy cats <1% reticulocytes.
In a normal dog, 35% to 55% of the blood will be red blood cells. If the PCV is below 35%, the dog is generally considered anemic. Other tests to determine anemia include the red blood cell count and the hemoglobin count.
9 Σεπ 2016 · HCT / PCV: Hematocrit (HCT) and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) both indicate what percentage of blood is comprised of red blood cells (as opposed to other types of blood cells, blood proteins, and water). A normal measurement in a dog is about 45%, while normal in a cat is around 35%.
