The aims of this paper are to provide reference equations for static lung volumes for a cohort of healthy never-smoking white European adults between 65 and 85 years of age and to compare the predicted values of this sample with those from other studies including middle-aged adults.

The range of “normal values” for this ratio is age dependent, being wider in both the young and the elderly, and sex differences are apparent, with females having greater predicted values of FEV 1 /FVC than males at all ages and which are most marked in late puberty .
Did you know that the maximum amount of air healthy adult lungs can hold—also called total lung capacity or TLC—is about 6 liters? That is about three large soda bottles. Your lungs mature by the time you are about 20-25 years old. After about the age of 35, it is normal for your lung function to decline gradually as you age.
1 Δεκ 2009 · Measurements and main results: Plethysmography provided higher values than the dilutional method for all lung volumes, with wide limits of agreement. In addition to height, our reference equations confirm the age- and body size dependence of lung volumes in older subjects.
Normal lung function values are influenced by many factors, including age, height, body mass index (BMI, kg/m 2), sex, ethnic origin, physical activity, environmental conditions, altitude, tobacco smoking, and socioeconomic status.
4 Απρ 2024 · The analyses used data from 5371 subjects (Fig. 1 ), including 2397 males (43.9%) and 2974 females (56.1%), aged from 6 to 80 years. The baseline characteristics of this cohort are shown in Table 1 for males and Table 2 for females. The majority of included individuals were between 6 to 30 years.
Sex specific reference equations including height and age were developed for total lung capacity (TLC), FRC, residual volume (RV), inspiratory capacity (IC), vital capacity (VC) and expiratory reserve volume (ERV) and RV/TLC datasets.
