Patients who are hyperthyroid will have an elevated T3 level. In some individuals with a low TSH, only the T3 is elevated and the FT4 or FTI is normal. T3 testing rarely is helpful in the hypothyroid patient, since it is the last test to become abnormal. Patients can be severely hypothyroid with a high TSH and low FT4 or FTI, but have a normal T3.
The thyroid is a component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, which is responsible for maintaining normal levels of thyroid hormones (Figure 1).1 Thyroid hormones, T and T. 3 4, play an essential role in the regulation of many aspects of metabolism2,3,4, with T being the predominant.
Low thyroid hormone levels cause the body’s functions to slow down, leading to general symptoms like dry skin, fatigue, loss of energy, and memory problems. Hypothyroidism is diagnosed by a simple blood test for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
• Elevated TSH 10+ with either normal or low T4 / FTI / Free T4 = Hypothyroidism • Low TSH with normal T4 / FTI / Free T4 = Subclinical hyperthyroidism
3 Οκτ 2023 · Comparing High/Low TSH and T3/T4 Levels . While the TSH test is valuable, it is more useful when referenced to T3/T4 results. By comparing TSH with T3/T4 values, your healthcare provider may have a clearer picture of the cause of thyroid disease.
If the TSH level is low and the FT4 result is high this suggests an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) that requires treatment. If the TSH level is slightly raised but the FT4 level is still within the normal reference range this is called subclinical hypothyroidism or mild thyroid failure.
